Review
The Philadelphia Daily News
Look out Bill and Ted, Wayne and Garth, and you too, Dick and Tom (as inSmothers). Trout Fishing in America, the oddest couple in contemporary folkmusic to ever name themselves after a Richard Brautigan book, have plumstolen my heart. And they've done it with a quirky album of children's songs,no less (and no more), called 'Big Trouble.' Heavy into the dark and corrupted side of growing up, they sing of being a prisoner at an after school center on the wailing 'Day Care Blues,' pump up the 'Teddy Bear's Picnic' with a slick arrangement, and work themselves into a tongue-twisted frenzy with the highly caffeinated 'What I Want Is a Proper Cup of Coffee.'
Here are songs that treat kids as smart, cynical and obstinate--akin tothe empowering work of Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss. And the stufftranslates equally well to us big kids (passing for adults), too. No wonderthis Houston-based duo--diminutive Keith Grimwood on bass and vocals,super-tall Ezra Idlet on guitar and vocals--do much the same material at boththeir children's matinees and evening soirees ostensibly for adults only. Atboth, be ready to quake and quack to 'Five Little Ducks,' not to mention rock'n' roll, reggae and stroll to their deliciously mixed musical bag.
