February 2000
Dear e-Fisherfolk:
Do we look like we just got off the boat? Well, we did. We've just
returned from a week long cruise. We took our families with us on the
Kerrville Folk Festival cruise that went to Cozumel Mexico, Roatan Honduras,
and Belize (which was formerly called British Honduras). The festival booked
Alisa Fineman, Sara Hickman, Susan Werner, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Tom Kimmel and
Trout to play on the ship. It was a mini Folk Festival at sea, complete with
jam sessions. We baked in the sun, visited Mayan ruins, went snorkeling and
fishing. Ezra cut his hair all off last month and wasn't quite prepared for
the effect the sun would have on his tender ears. Talk about sunburn! After
about two hours on a fishing boat, he could hear his ears sizzling. The
sunscreen had all the protective effect of barbecue sauce.
The last day of our trip took us to Key West, Florida. Keith (who had
been suffering from newspaper withdrawal) picked up a copy of the New York
Times and there on the front page was a picture of our hometown,
Fayetteville, Arkansas! There was snow all over the ground. Trucks were off
the highway. It looked like chaos. Ah yes, it's always great to get back
home. This was quite a contrast from the Caribbean vacation we had been
enjoying. The kids were enthusiastic at the prospect of additional time off
from school. The Idlet children had a great snow battle in the back yard.
They built snow forts and hurled snowballs at each other. The forts are still
standing, but are diminishing rapidly as the snow is finally melting. Keith's
son, Kevin, stayed online for 2 days.
One of the things cruise ships pride themselves on is extravagant food.
Fine food. Gourmet meals. Midnight buffets. In our last letter, we reported
our resolution and commitment to turning our bodies into "mean lean music
machines." It was rough sailing there for a week, but we're happy to report
that no significant Trout weight was gained and the quest goes on. Now it's
time for us to get back to work and play music. We'll see you soon.
