April – June 1998

Dear e-Fisherfolk,

This calendar will take us from where we are now into the teeth of summer, but for the present it is obvious that Spring has truly arrived. The signs are everywhere you look. On the Idlet farm, there are five new baby goats. The barn swallows and purple martins have returned and are hard at work building their nests. Work and leisure compete for our attention. Work generally wins. Lawn mowers desperately try to keep up with the rising tide of green. Many of us have sprung forward in clock time so we can have even more daylight hours to mow. Keith’s mower ran out of gas and he parked it overnight without turning the key to the off position. Have you ever done that? It’s not a good thing. The battery died and now the hard to locate, expensive, difficult to use, newly purchased battery has been filled with evil fluid and is trickle-charging in the garage. It will either blow up or be OK, but looking on the bright side, at least he’s not out mowing.

So, did you see it? Did you see our live concert special, Family Music Party, on PBS? We hope you did and we hope you liked it. The response has been good. We got calls and e-mail from all over the USA. We even heard from some fine folks in North Dakota and we’ve never been there. We’d like to thank Bruce and Ellen Marcus for all the work they did in getting this show together. It’s truly amazing what it takes to bring something as simple as a Trout show to television. The result was worth the effort. The companion CD for Family Music Party is now available in stores or through us on Trout Records, and the video will be ready soon.

We’re going to get a chance to play with our band from “Family Music Party” again. Many of you know the incomparable Kathy O’Connell, but many of you don’t. You should. Kathy is the host of one of the coolest, finest radio shows for kids (or anybody) in the country. It’s called Kid’s Corner and it airs on WXPN in Philadelphia. We believe it should be nationally syndicated. It’s a talk show where only kids can call in. She presents computer experts, nurses, politicians, professional people, new and old music and musicians, and talks about whatever occurs to her. Many people who don’t even have kids have admitted to being ardent fans of her show. Kid’s Corner has been on the air for 10 years now and it’s time for a Birthday Party! It will be held at the Mann Center in Philadelphia on June 14th. We’re going to celebrate Kathy’s birthday party with the full band featuring Fred Bogert on keyboards, Josh Dubin on pedal steel and dobro and Wayne Killius on drums. We’ll even be singing Kathy Was Right, a song we wrote for her.

We’re going to be doing a lot of traveling this year by air and by van. There are some pretty weird jumps from state to state. It should be interesting. We’ll probably get a lot of reading done during the airplane flights. If we’re not in your neighborhood on this calendar, we should be getting there by the next one. We’ll see you then..

Troutfully Yours,
Ezra and Keith
